What a freestanding gate is

A freestanding gate stands on its own feet, so it does not need to be pressed against walls or screwed into a doorframe. The panels unfold into a zigzag or angled shape that holds itself upright on the floor. Most are meant for indoor use at doorways, hallways, or the bottom of stairs.

How it differs from a mounted gate

A pressure-mounted gate squeezes between two surfaces and relies on that tension to stay put. A freestanding gate relies on its own frame and support feet instead, which means it can be moved from room to room without leaving marks. The trade-off is that it is easier to push aside if a dog leans on it hard.

Panels, doors, and folding

Many freestanding gates fold flat when not in use, and some have a small door built into one panel so you can step through without moving the whole thing. Panel counts run from two up to several, and wider setups cover more of an opening. Folding matters if you want to store the gate between uses or carry it to another room.

Materials, colors, and sizes

Wood frames with steel wire infill show up often, as do all-metal versions, and the wood ones tend to be described as chew-resistant. Common finishes include: black, brown, gray, white, cherry. Heights cluster around 24 to 30 inches, and widths vary widely from narrow two-panel gates to extra-wide setups meant for long openings.
