Auto-close Safety Gates

How the closing action works

The hinge is weighted or spring-loaded so that when you let go, the gate swings shut on its own and the latch catches. You do not have to remember to pull it closed behind you, which matters when your hands are full or a dog is trying to follow. The dual-lock versions add a second catch point that has to be released before the gate opens.

Where these gates fit

Widths run from about 29.2 inches up to 69 inches, so the same closing mechanism appears on narrow stair openings and on wide room dividers. Walk-through models in the longer widths are built for spots you pass constantly, while the shorter ones are sized for stairwells and doorways. The no-bottom-bar version leaves the floor clear at the threshold, which reduces a trip point on stairs.

Finishes and mounting

The gates come in black, brown, and gray, with white appearing on the walk-through models. Brown tends to sit better against wood trim and darker stair rails, while black and gray read as more neutral against painted walls. Mounting hardware is included for the stair and doorway configurations shown.

What to keep in mind

The auto-close swing needs clearance on the side the gate opens toward, so a wall or banister directly beside the hinge can stop it from latching. On stairs, the gate still has to be mounted securely because the closing force is not a substitute for a solid anchor. The latch release on dual-lock models takes two motions, which slows a determined dog but also slows you.
