What a retractable gate is

A retractable safety gate uses a flexible mesh panel that pulls across an opening and rolls back into a slim housing when not in use. The mesh spans wide openings that a rigid gate cannot cover, and the housing mounts to a wall or doorframe. Colors run to black and gray, with some white versions in the mix.

How it differs from other forms

Unlike pressure-mounted or hardware-mounted rigid gates, a retractable gate stores itself away, so a hallway or doorway returns to full width the moment the mesh is released. That makes it useful where a permanent barrier would be in the way most of the day.

The trade-off is tension. The mesh relies on reinforced strips or support rods to stay taut, and some designs include a rod specifically to stop a pet or child from crawling through the gap. Rigid gates do not have that problem, but they also cannot span the widths these do.

Sizes and mounting details

Widths in this form run from short spans up to extra-wide openings, and heights range from standard to extra tall. Mounting is typically hardware-based at both sides of the opening, and the mesh retracts into one side. Common configurations include: black, gray, white, extra wide, extra tall.
