A gate that stays where you put it

A hardware mounted gate is screwed into the wall or stair post, so the frame does not shift when a dog pushes against it. That fixed attachment is the point: at the top of a staircase, a gate that gives even an inch is a gate that fails. The mount also lets the gate swing on a hinge rather than lift out of a bracket, which is why walk-through models in this form open and close like a door.

Most of these gates use a no-bottom-bar design, meaning the floor between the two mounting points stays clear. That matters on stairs, where a bar across the tread is a trip hazard for the person carrying a laundry basket. The tradeoff is that installation requires drilling, and the gate is not something you move to another doorway on a whim.

Widths, finishes, and the walk-through door

Hardware mounted gates adjust across a range rather than fitting one exact opening. Common spans run from about 24.75 to 43 inches for a single gate, with extra-wide models reaching 72 inches or more. Heights sit around 28 to 31 inches. Black and white are the finishes that show up, and the metal frame is the material you are mounting.

The walk-through door is standard in this form, and it usually auto-closes behind you — a latch that swings shut on its own so the gate is not left open. One-handed operation is the other recurring detail, since you are often holding a child or a leash in the other hand. Quick-release hardware appears on some models, letting you lift the gate off its mounts for storage without unscrewing the brackets.
