Low barriers for small breeds

A short dog gate sits low to the floor, often 10 to 16 inches tall, and acts as a visual and physical cue rather than a wall. These gates are meant to be stepped over without breaking stride, so the top rail stays below knee height. They suit doorways, kitchen entries, and stair landings where a full-height gate would be overkill.

The form is a single low panel, sometimes with a small built-in door, mounted under pressure or with hardware. Because the barrier is short, the dog sees over it, which can reduce the frantic jumping that taller gates provoke in small breeds. The trade-off is that a determined jumper or a larger dog will clear it easily.

How short gates differ from standard and tall gates

Standard gates run around 28 inches and tall gates reach 36 inches or more, both designed to block a dog at chest or shoulder height. A short gate does the opposite: it stays under 20 inches so a person can step across without unlatching anything. That makes it a different product for a different job, not a smaller version of the same barrier.

Sizes, colors, and details

Widths adjust across a wide span, from 18 to 55 inches depending on the model, with extension kits adding reach. Colors include black, brown, and white, and heights land at 10, 14, 16, or 24 inches. Pressure-mount frames dominate, and some include a small door for a puppy or cat to pass through.
